As a result of this food drive, I learned a few new things about food insecurity and how it affects our community, friends and neighbours. 

  • Prevalence: As of 2023, 25% of households in Durham Region experience food insecurity.  Source 

  • Cost of a Healthy Diet: As of June 2024, the price of a basic healthy diet for a family of four was $286 per week, or $1,232 per month. ​ Source 


👥 Who Is Most Affected?

Food insecurity is closely linked to income levels. Groups at higher risk include:​

  • Single-parent households led by women with children under 25.

  • Individuals relying on social assistance programs like Ontario Works or the Ontario Disability Support Program.​

  • Racialized communities.​

  • College and university students.​

Notably, in 2021, 52% of food-insecure households in Ontario were part of the workforce, relying on low-wage or precarious employment.  Source 


🩺 Health Impacts

Food insecurity is associated with increased risks of:​

  • Type 2 diabetes.​

  • High blood pressure.​

  • Depression.​

  • Higher healthcare utilization.​

Healthcare costs for food-insecure adults are 121% higher than those for food-secure adults.  Source 


💵 Financial Strain

After accounting for rent and food, a family earning minimum wage in Ontario has approximately $1,441 left for all other monthly expenses. Source
